3636522 - Job Posting Errors with Multi-Byte Characters: "Internal Exception: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: String or binary data would be truncated." - Recruiting Marketing

Symptom

  • Error on ATS Import: "Internal Exception: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: String or binary data would be truncated."
  • Posted job requisitions are not appearing in the search results.
  • Getting a 400 Bad Request error when trying to view job postings from the search results.

Environment

  • SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting Management
  • SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting Marketing

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Post job requisitions in SuccessFactors Recruiting.
  2. Observe that new job postings are not appearing in the search results after 15 minutes.
  3. Encounter a 400 bad request error when trying to view job postings from the search results.

Cause

Java and MSSQL handle the length of multi-byte characters differently. When the job title exceeds the length limit in bytes, the truncation logic runs.

Resolution

The fix for this issue has been deferred and the new schedule is 1H 2026 release. For release timelines, please review SAP SuccessFactors Product Release & Road Map Information

Workaround

  • Shorten the job title and/or job location so the system's truncation logic is not triggered.
  • Using fewer characters prevents the text from being truncated.
  • Replace full-width punctuation marks with half-width punctuation marks. This reduces the overall character length and can prevent truncation.
