3644251 - BPMN XML import warning: Discarded element due to invalid reference from DI to Semantics part in BPMN 2.0 XML

Symptom

The import process of the BPMN 2.0 XML file succeeded with warnings, as there were discarded elements. The warning shown is 'Discarded element due to invalid reference from DI to Semantics part in BPMN 2.0 XML'

The diagram gets created, but process elements are missing.

Resolution

BPMN XML is a standard specified by Object Management Group. Two of the structural parts of BPMN XML files are 'semantics' and 'BPMN DI':

  • Semantics contain the process and process elements (e.g. sequence flows, tasks or gateways) and is placed within the <process> tag.
  • BPMN DI (diagram interchange) is the information for visual display of the process elements, which can be found at the <bpmndi> tags.

Every element of a process does have an ID. Semantics and BPMN DI are linked by those IDs. The error message 'invalid reference from DI to Semantics' means that there is no linkage between those two parts or the linkage is not correct, e.g. the information on the process elements is missing.

The verification can be done by opening the file. The file can be opened with any text editor, as it is a human-readable text file.
