Symptom
- Return Orders were created using order type CBAR, and Return Delivery and Credit Memo processing were completed, but the rejected stock did not move to blocked stock as expected.
- Goods Movement Status for Return Deliveries remains "A" (Not Yet Started).
- Movement Type 657 (Return to Blocked Stock) is correctly assigned, but no material document has been created.
Environment
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
Reproducing the Issue
- Create a Return Order via Create Sales Order (VA01).
- Create and release the Return Delivery.
- Generate the Credit Memo (manually or automatically).
- Observe that:
- Credit Memo is completed.
- Return Delivery remains in Open status.
- No material document is posted.
- Stock is not visible in Stock Overview (MMBE).
- Observe that:
Cause
- The issue occurs when the Post Goods Movement (PGI) for the return delivery is not executed.
- In SAP S/4HANA Cloud, generating a credit memo for a return does not automatically post the returned quantity into stock. The system requires an explicit goods movement (typically movement type 657) to receive the returned goods back into inventory.
Resolution
To complete the return process and ensure stock is received into inventory:
- Go to Change Outbound Delivery (VL02N).
- Enter the Return Delivery number.
- Perform Post Goods Movement (PGI).
- Once completed:
- A material document will be created (e.g., with movement type 657).
- Returned quantity will appear in Stock Overview under Blocked Stock or Returns.
