3660340 - Input prompt variables cannot be displayed in SAP Analytics Cloud story consuming an import model based on a BW query.

Symptom

The input prompt variables cannot be displayed in an SAC story that consumes an import model based on a BW query and having BW variables defined.

Images and data taken from SAP internal systems and demo environments. Any similarity to production data is purely coincidental.

Environment

SAP Analytics Cloud.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Log in to SAC.

  2. Create a new model based on a BW query.

  3. Create a new SAC Story and add the import model to the story.

  4. Click Edit Prompts in the Tools menu.
    >>Observe that the BW prompts cannot be viewed or used. Instead, the following message is displayed: "No models require prompts"

Cause

  1. The behavior is by design.
  2. When connecting to SAP BW via an import connection, the data is imported into SAC and is no longer linked to the live BW system during the session. Unlike live connections, which allow real-time querying and interaction with the backend, import connections do not support dynamic prompts or variables from the original BEx query.

Resolution

To use BEx variable prompts, consider the following alternatives:

  • Establish a Live Connection: This maintains a real-time link to your BW system, enabling the use of BEx variables and prompts directly within SAC.
  • Apply Filters in the Story: Users can apply filters to limit the displayed data. However, prompts and variables from the original BEx query are not available as in live mode.
