3675206 - Error "Serial number & is used more than once in transaction" during service confirmation creation

Symptom

During service confirmation creation, an error occurs when the same serial number is entered for different items within the same document: "Serial number & is used more than once in transaction"

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Access the service confirmation document.
  2. Assign the same serial number (e.g., serial number 10) to multiple items (e.g., line items 10 and 20).
  3. Observe the error message: "Serial number 10 is used more than once in transaction".

Cause

Serial numbers are designed to be unique identifiers for individual material instances. Each serial number has a 1:1 relationship with a specific material and represents a single physical object tracked throughout its lifecycle.

Resolution

A serial number cannot be reused or assigned to multiple materials or items within the same document. The system performs a duplicate check and issues the error message to enforce this uniqueness.

To solve this error, ensure the following:

  • That each serial number is assigned to only one material or item within the same document.
  • Update the document to remove duplicate serial number assignments.
  • Reattempt the service confirmation after correcting the serial number assignments.
