3683210 - SQL Error -10807 "Connection down" Despite Stable HANA Database - Client-Side Disconnect Due to Timeout and Outdated HANA Client

Symptom

In an SAP S/4HANA 108 / SAP_BASIS 758 system, the following symptoms occur frequently (approximately ten times per month):

  • SM21 logs: SQL error -10807 occurred; work process in reconnect status
  • Batch jobs such as /UI5/APP_IDX_UPD_AFTER_IMPORT are cancelled
  • End users experience short dumps
  • AWS confirms no network packet drops; VPC Flow logs normal
  • HANA traces show no crashes, resets or resource issues
  • Network capture shows the ABAP work process initiating the disconnect:
    1. AP > DB: EXECUTEDIRECT (CURRENT_CONNECTION FROM DUMMY)
    2. DB > AP: SELECT (CURRENT_CONNECTION.CURRENT_CONNECTION)
    3. AP > DB: ACK
    4. AP > DB: ROLLBACK
    5. DB > AP: ROLLBACK
    6. AP > DB: FIN
    7. DB > AP: RST
