3684216 - BRCONNECT fails during SUM phase with error: The command 'brconnect' from tool 'brconnect' could not be executed successfully.

Symptom

  • During the SUM 1.0 SP26 PL11 upgrade from SAP_BASIS 640 to 740 on AIX 7.1 with Oracle 11.2.0.4, the procedure stops in phase:PREP_INPUT_CHECK / TOOLVERSXML_EXTRACT.

  • SUM reports that BRCONNECT cannot be executed successfully.

  • Running BRCONNECT from the standard SAP kernel directory works:
    /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run/brconnect -V

  • However, running the same executable from the SUM directory fails:
    /usr/sap/<SID>/SUM/abap/exe/brconnect -V
exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program brconnect because of the following errors:
rtld: 0712-001 Symbol modf was referenced but not found.
rtld: 0712-001 Symbol strcat was referenced but not found.
rtld: 0712-001 Symbol fsav was referenced but not found.
rtld: 0712-001 Symbol fres was referenced but not found.
    rtld: 0712-002 fatal error: exiting.

  • An inspection of the SUM environment (e.g., brconnect_exe.out) shows that LIBPATH includes an Oracle 10g Instant Client directory:
    /oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient

  • This causes SUM to load Oracle 10g client libraries instead of the required Oracle 11g libraries.
