3690511 - Maintain Employees: "Unable to load the data" error encountered when saving user information

Symptom

After saving user information through the "Maintain Employees" app in Fiori portal, an error occurs: "Unable to load the data."

The issue generates an HTTP 500 (internal server error) for the service: APS_BUM_EMPLOYEE_SRV

A backend dump is generated with the following details in ST22:

Category: ABAP programming error
Runtime Errors: ASSERTION_FAILED
ABAP Program: CL_BUP_BAS_INTERFACE
Application Component: BC-SRV-BP
