3694495 - Error: "The material number exceeds the length of 1 characters currently defined for material numbers in Customizing" - SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Symptom

  • Error occurs in Create Material (MM01) application.
  • The material number is longer than the length set.
  • Message No. BMG 140.
  • Error: "The material number XXXXX exceeds the length of 1 characters currently defined for material numbers in Customizing."
    (where XXXXX is the material number entered)

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Open the Create Material (MM01) application.
  2. Enter a material number.
  3. Observe the error message.

Cause

The Material No. Length field in the configuration is maintained as 1, which restricts the maximum length of material numbers.

Resolution

  1. Navigate to the configuration settings for Define Output Format of Material Numbers (102320).
  2. Locate the Material No. Length field.
  3. Enter the maximum number of characters required for material numbers. The standard maximum length is 18. This can be extended to 40 on request.
  4. Save the changes to apply the updated configuration.

Please Note:

  • Once configured, the length of the product number must not be reduced as it will lead to issues.
  • It is not recommended to use a material number length greater than 35 characters.
  • Setting material length greater than 35 results in the warning BMG224 "Material numbers with more than 35 characters can cause problems in EDI".
  • KBA 3560881 - Once configured, the length of the product number must not be reduced.
