3694956 - Unable to maintain material number range with length greater than 18 characters

Symptom

The system does not allow the creation or maintenance of number ranges longer than 18 characters in SSCUI/Configuration Activity 102282 "Define Number Ranges for Each Material Type", even when the Material Field Length is set to a number greater than 18 characters long and the "Material Field Length Extension" expert configuration is active. 

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Activate "Material Field Length Extension" expert configuration in the tenant.
  2. Update material length to a length greater than 18 in SSCUI/Configuration Activity 102320 "Define Output Format of Material Numbers" and save.
  3. Navigate to SSCUI/Configuration Activity 102282 "Define Number Ranges for Each Material Type".
  4. Attempt to create or modify a number range to have a length greater than 18 characters.
  5. Observe that length of material numbers are still limited to 18 characters long.

Cause

The "Material Field Length Extension" expert configuration is designed to allow the creation and use of materials with an external number (material name) longer than 18 characters.
However, this extension does not apply to the definition of the number ranges themselves, which remain limited to a maximum length of 18 characters.

Although, number ranges with only 18 characters length can handle material number length greater than 18.
For example, product number "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST" is within the number range "AAA - ZZZ", even though the number range have only 3 characters.

Resolution

The ability to define material number ranges with a length greater than 18 characters is not available in the current version of SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition.

This would be considered a new feature or enhancement. You have the option to submit an improvement request for this functionality via the SAP Customer Influence program.
