Symptom
The ABAP List Viewer (ALV) allows data to be exported to Microsoft Excel through a few methods:
- XXL Interface (Spreadsheet): The most common method, which opens the data directly in an Excel application. (List -> Export -> Spreadsheet or via the Export toolbar button).
- Export as Local File: Saves the formatted data to a text file that must then be manually imported into Excel. (List -> Export -> Local File).
- Excel In-place View: An alternative display mode that renders the data within an embedded Excel view inside the SAP screen. (Views -> Microsoft Excel (Ctrl+Shift+F7) or via the Excel Inplace button).
It is important to note that these export functions are designed for interactive use with manageable datasets. When used to export large volumes of data, they frequently cause severe performance issues, leading to very long runtimes, system freezes, and short dumps like TIME_OUT, STRING_SIZE_TOO_LARGE or CX_SY_STRING_SIZE_TOO_LARGE.
