3699545 - Missing "Active Linked Dimension" setting in Optimized Design Experience for model blending in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

Symptom

  • SAC Story's previously effective link setting "Active Linked Dimension" in the classic story is no longer available in the optimized design experience for model blending.
  • Due to this missing setting, if the linked dimension is not added to the table, the filter for the variable filter of one model will not take effect.
  • Linked variables cannot be set because one model has a variable while another model does not.

Environment

SAP Analytics Cloud 2025.21

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Open the problem story. The story has linked model and has a date type linked dimension, for example: link Date1 from model1 and Date2 from model2.
  2. Set variable screenshots. This variable is from one model only, another model doesnot have variable.
For example, here is the variable settings:
    • Date1 (From): 3/1/2025
    • Date1 (To): 3/3/2025
  3. Observe that in classis story, there is a setting called "Active Linked Dimension". Although linked variables cannot be set because one model has a variable while another model does not, when "Active Linked Dimension" is checked for linked dimension "Date1 - Date2", the filter set in the variable also takes effect for the linked dimension.
  4. But in Optimized Design Experience story,  in the new table design experience,
=> Note that there is no setting "Active Linked Dimension". Therefore, the filter set in the variable does not take effect for the linked dimension if the linked dimension is not activate by added it in the table or set as filter.

Cause

  • The removal of the "Active Linked Dimension" setting is by design. With the deprecation of out-of-context blending support in the optimized design experience, the implementation of blending has changed. Only linked dimensions added to the chart or table binding are treated as active linked dimensions, while others do not take effect.

Resolution

  1. Add the linked dimension to the table in the optimized design experience to ensure filters set in variables take effect.
  2. Alternatively, create a story filter for the linked dimension and update the range based on the prompt setting. This will ensure the linked model measure updates based on the filter.
  3. Note that the optimized design experience does not support out-of-context blending or pseudo blending. If these functionalities are critical to business needs, consider exploring alternative approaches, such as creating a CDS view (LIVE model) to represent the data without relying on SAC-side blending.
