Symptom
- Error message "An exception was raised. Controlling area was derived from Responsible Cost Center" appears when attempting to copy a project in SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud.
- Specific app context: Project Control - Enterprise Projects app.
- Error occurs during the project copy operation, preventing successful completion of the copy process.
Environment
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
Reproducing the Issue
- Go to Project Control - Enterprise Projects.
- Select the project and click on 'Copy' button.
- Insert as project name.
- Select Planned start.
- In the dropdown of Settlement Rule Maintenance, select 'With Pass-Down Option' and mark the checkbox Pass-Down Settlement Rule.
- Click on the create button.
- Error is raised: "Controlling Area was derived from Responsible Cost Center. An exception was raised."
Cause
- The investment profile of all Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) elements is not consistent with the settlement element of the parent WBS.
- The WBS have different investment profile 000003 (Model AuC Intangible) while others WBS may have profile 000001 (Model with AuC), creating an incompatibility.
Resolution
- Verify the investment profile of all WBS and its child WBS elements.
- Adjust the investment profile to match the profile to the same.
- Ensure that all WBS elements in the project hierarchy have consistent investment profiles.
- Retry the project copy operation with the updated investment profiles.
