Symptom

  • Error message "An exception was raised. Controlling area was derived from Responsible Cost Center" appears when attempting to copy a project in SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud.
  • Specific app context: Project Control - Enterprise Projects app.
  • Error occurs during the project copy operation, preventing successful completion of the copy process.

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to Project Control - Enterprise Projects.
  2. Select the project and click on 'Copy' button.
  3. Insert as project name.
  4. Select Planned start.
  5. In the dropdown of Settlement Rule Maintenance, select 'With Pass-Down Option' and mark the checkbox Pass-Down Settlement Rule.
  6. Click on the create button.
  7. Error is raised: "Controlling Area was derived from Responsible Cost Center. An exception was raised."

Cause

  • The investment profile of all Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) elements is not consistent with the settlement element of the parent WBS.
  • The WBS have different investment profile 000003 (Model AuC Intangible) while others WBS may have profile 000001 (Model with AuC), creating an incompatibility.

Resolution

  1. Verify the investment profile of all WBS and its child WBS elements.
  2. Adjust the investment profile to match the profile to the same.
  3. Ensure that all WBS elements in the project hierarchy have consistent investment profiles.
  4. Retry the project copy operation with the updated investment profiles.
