Symptom
Reports one or more of the following:
- Product Hierarchy assignment was deleted, but they still need to see historical hierarchy data.
- Old hierarchy names still appear in reports.
- The hierarchy no longer appears in Manage Product Hierarchies, but sales reports still reference it.
- Customer cannot find where historical Product Hierarchy data is stored.
Environment
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
Cause
In SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Product Hierarchies are time-dependent and transactional.
When a sales or billing document is created, the Product Hierarchy that is valid on that posting date is written into the document.
Even if:
- The hierarchy assignment is later deleted, or
- A new hierarchy version is created
the original Product Hierarchy value remains stored in the historical documents to protect reporting, pricing, and financial integrity. Therefore, historical hierarchies are not removed from reports or documents.
Resolution
Historical Product Hierarchy data is automatically preserved and can be viewed in:
- Sales Orders
- Billing Documents
- Sales and Analytics Reports
The system determines the correct hierarchy by:
- The document posting date
- The Product Hierarchy stored in the document item
No manual reactivation or re-assignment of old hierarchies is required.
To make structural changes for future transactions, create a new version using Copy → To Existing Hierarchy (New Timeframe). Old versions will continue to be used for historical reporting, while the new version applies to future documents.
