Symptom
- Selecting an account on a new sales order shows error or blank for employee responsible.
- Accounts often have no designated owner; Account/ territory steps return no value.
- Rules maintained under sales & campaign settings -> define rules for sale order parties did not populate employee responsible
Environment
- SAP Cloud for Customer (C4C)
Reproducing the Issue
- Go to Sales > Sales Order
- Create new
- Select "Document type and Account
- Save and Open
- Go to Involved Parties tab
See that "Employee Responsible" is not determined and warning message "Please enter a party with role Employee Responsible." appears
Cause
Employee Responsible on Sales Order is determined only by the determination step "Responsibility: Employee Responsible for Sales," which consumes Employee Work Distribution rules. Sales & Campaign "Sales order Parties" rules do not drive this party and can cause confusion or overrides.
Resolution
1) Involved Parties configuration
- Path: Business Configuration → Activity List → Sales Orders → Maintain Involved Parties → Party “Employee Responsible” → Maintain Determination.
- Action: Make “Responsibility: Employee Responsible for Sales” the first ACTIVE step; keep Account/Territory below or temporarily inactive while testing.
2) Employee Work Distribution rules
- Path: Administrator → General Settings→ Employee Work Distribution → Sales and Marketing → Employee Responsible for Sales.
- Actions:
1. Enable criteria in “Criteria to Determine Responsibilities for Sales” (Company, Sales Org, Country/Region/City/ZIP, etc.).
2. Create rule lines with valid dates and assignees who are Active and belong to the correct Sales Unit. Add a broad fallback rule (e.g., Company only).
3) Remove obsolete rules
- Path: Sales & Campaign Settings → Define Rules for Sales Order Parties.
- Action: Deactivate/remove rules intended to set Employee Responsible; keep only if needed for other roles.
