3707695 - Query with EXCEPT clause using very high procedure cache - ASE

Symptom

  • A query using the EXCEPT clause on a (very) large table
  • Is consuming a large amount of procedure cache
  • A 701 'out of procedure cache' is not immediately reported
  • Attempting to kill the process running the query does not kill it immediately
  • If a 701 is later reported, the process consuming memory may resolve it self

  • The spid running the query shows as a long running transaction in syslogshold with name of $sort_local
  • A dbcc stacktrace on the spid will include ASE code functions:

    mem_pageallocate
    mem_getpages
    memalloc
    LeHashPartition::AddBuffer LeHashContext
    LeHashTable::Build LeAlignedDataRow
