Symptom

When accessing Learning in Safari browser on iOS devices and launching a course, the browser redirects the user to the Learning app, and the course is launched in the app instead of the browser.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Access Learning via Safari browser on an iOS device.
  2. Attempt to launch a course.
  3. The browser redirects to the Learning app, and the course is launched in the app instead of the browser.

Cause

The engineering team has confirmed that the issue is caused by an iOS feature called Universal Links. When the relevant app is installed on the device, iOS automatically redirects supported links to open within the app instead of the browser.

Resolution

  1. This behavior is by design due to the iOS Universal Links feature.
  2. If the Learning app is installed on the device, supported links will open within the app.
  3. If the Learning app is not installed on the device, the course will continue to open in the Safari browser.
