3715610 - Manager change via Job Info import removes the employee's Position from the Job Info when Reporting Hierarchy is the Leading Hierarchy

Symptom

  • Leading Hierarchy is set as Reporting Hierarchy in Position Management Settings > Hierarchy Adaptation tab and when Manager change of any employee is performed via Job Information import from Import Employee Data page, the Manager is updated correctly however the employee's Position is removed.
  • The issue is encountered only when the Manager change is performed via import. However when the Manager change is performed from MSS UI, the Manager Change is correctly updated in the Job Info of the employee and the Higher-Level Position is also updated in the employee's Position.

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central - Position Management

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Set Reporting Hierarchy as Leading Hierarchy in Position Management Settings
  2. Navigate to Import Employee Data page.
  3. Select Entity > Job Information.
  4. Select the Job Info import CSV > Import.
  5. Observe that the Job Info of the employee is updated with the new Manager; however, the Position is removed.

Cause

This is expected behavior when Reporting Hierarchy is set as Leading Hierarchy in Position Management Settings.

The difference in behavior between UI and import is as follows:

  • In UI: The position defaulting checks if a new position under the new manager is vacant and matches relevant attributes (Company and Standard Weekly Hours). If no such position is found, the current position is retained, and the hierarchy adapts to move the current user's position under the new manager's position.
  • Via Import: The position defaulting checks if a lower-level position under the new manager is vacant and matches relevant attributes (Company and Standard Weekly Hours). If no such position is found, the current position is cleared, and the user's job info record is saved with the new manager but without a position.

Resolution

  • The position hierarchy is the leading hierarchy by default.
  • SAP SuccessFactors highly recommends that you keep it this way. Many Position Management features are designed with the assumption that the position hierarchy is the leading one.
