3716232 - Understanding SAP HANA tenant database backup failures with "global_allocation_limit reached" during backup catalog processing

Symptom

  • A tenant database backup in SAP HANA fails.
  • The following error is reported in the backup log or SQL output:

Could not fetch backup catalog
transaction rolled back by an internal error: Allocation failed
global allocation limit configured in [memorymanager] global_allocation_limit reached

  • The SystemDB backup may complete successfully while the tenant database backup fails.
  • The issue can appear after a restart, configuration change, or operating system maintenance, although the system is otherwise operational.
  • Increasing the global_allocation_limit parameter or system memory does not permanently resolve the problem.
