During a database recovery or system copy in SAP HANA, the restore fails with an encryption-related error even though encryption appears to be disabled on both the source and the target systems.
Typical error messages:
- “Encryption root keys backup password doesn't exist. It must be either set in the database or must be given with the backup/recover SQL statement.”
- “Backup root key required for decryption not found in key store.”
- “No root key matching hash found during recovery.”
Customers verify:
M_PERSISTENCE_ENCRYPTION_STATUSshows encryption OFF- Encryption was disabled before the restore
- Source and target system have identical HANA versions
Despite this, recovery consistently fails with encryption errors.
