3716314 - SAP HANA database restore fails with encryption error although encryption is disabled on both source and target systems

Symptom

During a database recovery or system copy in SAP HANA, the restore fails with an encryption-related error even though encryption appears to be disabled on both the source and the target systems.

Typical error messages:

  • “Encryption root keys backup password doesn't exist. It must be either set in the database or must be given with the backup/recover SQL statement.”
  • “Backup root key required for decryption not found in key store.”
  • “No root key matching hash found during recovery.”

Customers verify:

  • M_PERSISTENCE_ENCRYPTION_STATUS shows encryption OFF
  • Encryption was disabled before the restore
  • Source and target system have identical HANA versions

Despite this, recovery consistently fails with encryption errors.
