3724645 - Training completion not recorded for LinkedIn courses

LinkedIn course imported to LMS is not recording completion and the following error is encountered:

"LINKEDINLEARNING is associated with Multiple Items. Cannot proceed with Record Learning"

2. Navigate to Learning Administration > Learning Activities > Items >
3. Search for an access the item that has been created for an imported LinkedIn course >
4. Attempt to record the completion of the course >
5. Observe that the completion is not recorded, and the error message is displayed.

Multiple instances of the same course ID exist in LMS with different item IDs, causing the system to return an error when recording completion.

As per Engineering team, the issue happens when LinkedIn Learning pushes a course update via API (/v1/OcnCourses), mostly when a payload contains thousands of OCN courses that are getting pushed to the Learning tenant at the same time.

Because of the huge amount of records, parallel threads process the same course data at the same time, resulting in duplicate inserts to the PA_OCN_COURSE table.

Currently, before inserting a new record, the system checks at the application level whether a matching record already exists. However, this check is not enforced at the database level. In scenarios involving concurrent requests, multiple threads may perform this check simultaneously and find that no existing record is present. As a result, both requests can proceed with the insert, leading to duplicate entries. This limitation becomes more pronounced in clustered environments, where multiple nodes of the service are running simultaneously. 

Although a validation check is performed for every record prior to insertion, it is not sufficient to prevent duplicates in high-concurrency or multi-instance environments (such as clustered deployments), where parallel operations can bypass this logic. The likelihood of this issue occurring is extremely is low. 

To fully resolve this issue, a database-level unique constraint on the PROVIDER_ID and COURSE_ID parameters is required. This will ensure that duplicate records cannot be created, regardless of concurrency or application behavior.

Workaround:

While our Engineering team works on a long term solution, a database script can be executed to remove duplicate rows from the PA_OCN_COURSE table and deactivate orphaned items.

To proceed with the script, please create a ticket under LOD-SF-LMS-OCN component and refer to this KBA. The SAP Support processor will then work with Engineering team.
