Symptom

  • An error occurs when entering the document number for a Permanent Resident Card issued in 1977 in Section 2 of the I-9 form.
  • The card contains only an A-number and lacks the modern alphanumeric card number.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Proxy as responsible user.
  2. Open the onboarding dashboard.
  3. Search for the affected user and open the details.
  4. Start the Section 2 task.
  5. Under List A, select "No" for the receipt option.
  6. Select "Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551)" for the documents presented.
  7. Select "DOJ Immigration and Naturalization Service" for the issuing authority.
  8. Select "Yes" for "Does the document have a number?".
  9. Enter the document number.
  10. Validation error displays.

Cause

The issue is caused by the system's validation process, which does not support older Permanent Resident Cards issued in 1977 that lack alphanumeric card numbers.

Resolution

  • The engineering team has created an enhancement request to support validation for all versions of U.S. Permanent Resident Cards (Form I-551).
  • The revised validation is planned for implementation in the 2H 2026 release.
