3730651 - Handling Bounce Back Messages (NDRs) and Delivery Status Notifications in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

There is a need to know if there is a way to receive bounce back messages (NDRs) or delivery status notifications in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition.

In the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, bounce back functionality is not supported yet as the corresponding technical infrastructure is not available. To identify delivery errors such as Non-Delivery Receipts (NDRs), bounce notifications generated by the external mail server can be reviewed.

Mail server logs may be checked, or bounce-handling can be configured within the email infrastructure (e.g., Microsoft Exchange, SAP Business Technology Platform mail service, or another SMTP provider). Some clients set up dedicated mailboxes to collect bounce notifications and then integrate that information back into SAP through custom development or middleware.

Email Relay SMTP Mailbox Monitoring – The email relay can be configured with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or SAP Business Technology Platform mail service to receive and log bounce messages. These NDRs are sent back to the sender's address configured in Output Management.

Central Monitoring – When using SAP BTP Integration Suite or an intermediate mail relay, monitoring or alert rules can be created to capture bounce codes and send notifications.

In summary, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition currently does not map external mailbox non-delivery errors back to monitoring applications. Therefore, middleware or external mail monitoring is required to address this limitation.
