3737212 - Calculation Input Controls display "not used in charts" message in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

Symptom

  • Calculation Input Controls (CICs) in SAP Analytics Cloud story display an error state indicating they are not used in the charts.
  • Navigating to a page where the CIC's linked calculations are actively used by a chart resolves the error — the CIC returns to a valid state.

Environment

  • Product: SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)
  • Calculation Input Control (CIC)

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Add a chart to a story by selecting any model.
  2. Create a calculation using a Calculation Input Control (CIC) on dimension1.
  3. Manage pages:
    a. Keep only the CIC on Page 1.
    b. Move the widget with calculation to another page (e.g., Page 2).
  4. Create a second calculation:
    a. Link it to the same CIC.
    b. The calculation should be in an error state.
  5. Work with a story calculation to lead second calculation to error state
    a. Create any story calculation (e.g., Aggregation).
    b. Use the aggregation calculation as a measure in the calculation created in Step 4.
    c. Delete the aggregation calculation.
    d. The second calculation will now be in an error state.
  6. Remove this error calculation from widget
  7. Add a new chart:
    a. Create a new page (Page 3).
    b. Add a chart including any measure.
  8. Save and reopen:
    a. Save the story.
    b. Open it in View Mode or Edit Mode.

Notice the following behaviors:

  • Switching from Page 1Page 3Page 1 causes the CIC to enter an error state.
  • Switching to Page 2 back to Page 1 makes the CIC valid again.

Cause

  • When a story is loaded, only the first page is rendered by default. If the story contains invalid calculations that are linked to CICs on the first page, and those calculations are not referenced by any chart on the currently visible page, the CICs evaluate their linked calculations as unused and enter an error state.

  • Navigating to a page that contains a chart using those calculations causes the CIC to re-evaluate and return to a valid state.

Resolution

A permanent fix to improve CIC usability is planned and will be delivered in an upcoming release.

Workaround

  1. Open the story in Edit mode.
  2. Identify and delete all invalid calculations.
  3. Save the story.

This prevents the CICs from entering an error state on load
