Symptom
When the User searched in their Library they can see 20 results. Yet if they create a Collection and attempt to Add Items to the item by searching only 5 items appear in the search.
Environment
SAP SuccessFactors Learning
Reproducing the Issue
- Open Learning and use the Library (Browse All/Find learning) to search for a term; note the results and available filters (including Learning Type > instructor-led).
- Create a new Collection and choose Add items from library.
- Search for the same term within the Collection add dialog.
- Observe that the results differ from the Library search and that the Learning Type filter (for instructor-led) is not available; in some cases, selecting a found element can display a different item within the Collection search context.
Cause
The difference in the number of results shown between the Library search and the Collections → Add from Library search is due to the way these two searches are intentionally designed to work within the system.
Resolution
The Library page is meant to provide a complete browsing experience for users. It displays all learning items that are available in the catalog, regardless of the item type. This includes Online courses, Instructor-Led courses, Blended courses, Curricula, Programs, and other content types. There are no restrictions at this level because the purpose of the Library is to allow users to explore everything that has been made available to them.
On the other hand, when a user searches from inside a Collection, the purpose of the search is different. A Collection is a curated list of learning items, and not every type of learning content is allowed to be added to a Collection. Because of this, the system automatically filters the search results to display only those items that are actually eligible to be added. Content types such as Instructor-Led courses, Curricula, Blended courses, and other Collections are intentionally excluded from this search because they are not supported for addition into a Collection.
As a result, even when the same keyword is searched in both places, the library shows a different number of results, from the Collection search. This is not due to missing data or an issue with the search, but due to built-in rules that control what can and cannot be added to a Collection.
