3743412 - Invalid Channel in Email Monitor even when the To Recipient address is correctly defined as an email channel

Symptom

  • Inbound emails fail in Email Monitor with error Invalid Channel.
  • The issue happens, even when there is already a correctly defined email channel.
  • You have also followed KBA 3253991, but the issue remains.
  • Emails are not processed or assigned to the expected email channel
  • Issue occurs inconsistently depending on the email routing path

Environment

  • SAP Service Cloud Version 2 1.0
  • SAP Sales Cloud Version 2 1.0

Cause

Resolution

  • Avoid multi-hop forwarding chains between mailboxes.
    • Do not configure sequential forwarding such as:
      • Mailbox A → Mailbox B → SAP
  • Ensure a single-hop forwarding design:
    • ✔ Recommended:
      • End User → Customer Mailbox → SAP
    • ❌ Not recommended:
      • End User → Mailbox A → Mailbox B → SAP
  • Remove or simplify mailbox rule chaining in the mail system.
  • Configure the email flow so that emails are sent directly to the mailbox that forwards to SAP.
  • Review mail server (e.g., Exchange) configuration for:
    • Automatic forwarding rules
    • Transport rules
    • Hidden forwarding layers
  • Validate raw email headers and check for indicators of multi-hop forwarding:
    • X-MS-Exchange-ForwardingLoop
    • X-LD-Processed: ExtFwd
    • Multiple forwarding/relay entries in Received headers
  • Ensure the email flow does not trigger forwarding loop protection mechanisms.
  • If multiple mailboxes are required:
    • Configure them to forward independently (parallel) to SAP
    • Avoid sequential forwarding between mailboxes
  • Example – Working Scenario (Single-Hop)
    • enduser@domain.com  
         → support@company.com  
            → SAP email channel
    • No loop handling headers
    • Clean routing chain
    • Email processed successfully
  • Example – Failing Scenario (Multi-Hop)
    • enduser@domain.com  
         → support@company.com  
            → internal-forward@company.com  
               → SAP email channel
    • Headers may include:
      • X-MS-Exchange-ForwardingLoop: ForwardingHandled
      • X-LD-Processed: ...,ExtFwd
    • Multiple forwarding steps
    • Loop handling triggered
    • Email fails with Invalid Channel
