3744983 - Intermittent SQL error -10709 due to connect timeout (connection not established) between SAP application server and SAP HANA

Symptom

Intermittent connection failures occur between the SAP application server and SAP HANA.

Typical error examples in work process traces (dev_w*) or system log (SM21):

SQL error -10709 occurred (possible network problems?)
Connect failed (connect timeout expired)
Initialization DB-Connect failed
Work process is stopped

Additional observations may include:

  • Work processes terminate during database connection attempts
  • Temporary system slowness or unresponsiveness
  • Delays during SAPGUI logon or transaction execution
  • The issue may occur intermittently and resolve without manual intervention
