3747383 - Error 1601: "Not Enough User Connections" with Related Errors 8601, 1251, and SPID Hang - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • Applications encounter issues connecting to the ASE Server.
  • The following error is reported in the errorlog of ASE Server:
        Error: 1601, Severity: 17, State: 1
        “There are not enough 'user connections' available to start a new process.”
  • After initial error 1601, additional errors can be reported:
    • Error: 8601, Severity: 20, State: 1
      “Process XXX tried to keep the PSS for process 1 when it already had the PSS for process YYY kept.”
    • Error: 1251, Severity: 26, State: 1
      “An in-use preallocated semaphore cursor was encountered,”
  • One or more SPIDs become unresponsive.
    • The unresponsive process is usually corresponding to the SPID YYY reported by error 8061.
    • The SPID YYY cannot be stopped by any command.
    • The ASE Server must be restarted to remove it.
