3748533 - How to model special periods using a custom date dimension in planning; SAP Analytics Cloud

Symptom

  • The user is unable to add booking periods 13, 14, 15, and 16 as used in S/4.
  • Information about flexible time was found, but it is not visible in the environments.
  • The user requests information about available options to create these booking periods.

Environment

  • SAP Analytics Cloud

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Open a planning model and attempt to configure time to include booking periods beyond months 1–12.
  2. Look for flexible time options in the model or story settings; they are not available.
  3. Observe there is no standard option to add special periods 13–16.

Cause

In the standard time dimension, special booking periods (13–16) are not supported in SAP Analytics Cloud; flexible time settings are not available to enable these periods.

Resolution

  1. Create a user-managed date dimension:

- Add a new date-type dimension and choose user-managed.

2.Add additional period members:

- For each fiscal year, create members for P13, P14, P15, and P16 (for example: 2024.P13, 2024.P14).

- Maintain attributes (for example: year, period, start/end date, description) as needed for reporting.

3.Build a custom hierarchy:

-Organize the hierarchy so that P13–P16 appear under the respective fiscal year after period 12.

4.Assign the dimension to your model:

- Use the user-managed date dimension in the planning model (replace standard time where applicable or include as the model’s date dimension).

5.Update stories and tables:

- Switch story tables and calculations to use the custom date dimension and its hierarchy for data entry and reporting.

Important note:These added periods behave as regular time members; they are not treated as system-level special posting periods.
