3749453 - Variable Handling in the BW MDX Interface

Symptom

BW query variables are exposed in the MDX layer using a specific naming convention. The function module BAPI_MDPROVIDER_GET_VARIABLES returns the currently assigned variable names as known to the MDX layer and should be used as the primary reference for variable name lookups.

In an MDX-statement, input-ready variable can be added using syntax: SAP VARIABLES [<VariableID>] INCLUDING [Dimension].[Member]

This article discusses some known limitations and issues that might arise in this context:

  • Reports that worked prior to an upgrade stop functioning due to variable name mismatches.
  • Variables in MDX queries are not resolved correctly.
  • User Exit Variables are also taken into account during GetMembers processing.
