Symptom
After upgrading to SAP Business ByDesign release 2602, users are no longer able to preview attachments directly in the browser or in a new browser tab.
Instead of opening inline, attachments are automatically downloaded to the local machine.
This behavior is observed in scenarios such as:
- Opening attachments from business documents
- Viewing documents through Output History
- Accessing files through File Management
Environment
SAP Business ByDesign
Reproducing the Issue
- Select any business document containing attachments or generated output documents.
Example:
Customer Invoice
Sales Order
Supplier Invoice - Open the Attachments tab or Output History section.
- Select a PDF, Excel, Word, or other supported document.
- Select attachment name or preview.
- Observe the document is Automatically downloaded.
Cause
As part of SAP security best practices, SAP has disabled browser-based preview functionality for attachments and generated documents.
Previously, attachments could be opened directly inside the browser window or a new browser tab. Starting with release 2602, files must first be downloaded locally before they can be viewed.
This change is designed to reduce exposure to browser-based vulnerabilities and improve overall document handling security.
Resolution
This behavior is expected and represents a product enhancement introduced with SAP Business ByDesign release 2602.
Users should:
- Download the attachment to their local device.
- Open the file using the corresponding native desktop application.
Example:
- PDF files → Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Excel files → Microsoft Excel
- Word documents → Microsoft Word
