3757480 - Within SAP Analytics Cloud, the "Open in Excel Add-in" button is grayed out in the Table menu.

Symptom

Within an SAP Analytics Cloud story, when using a table and going to the menu to open the referenced data in the SAC Excel Add-in, the 'Open in Excel Add-in' button is grayed out and cannot be clicked.

Environment

SAP Analytics Cloud

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Within SAP Analytics Cloud, create a new story and select a model with a 'User-Managed' Date dimension.
  2. Add a table and check the "Enable Excel Add-in" checkbox.
  3. In the table click on the 'More Actions' menu, the "Open in Excel Add-in" button will be grayed out and cannot be clicked.

Cause

The workflow to open the SAP Analytics Cloud Excel Add-in from the table using the 'Open in Excel Add-in' option, currently does not support models that contain custom date dimensions (Where the Date dimension within the model is set to 'User - Managed Date') therefore this feature is not available when the story is based on those models.

This is also documented within the online help for the SAP Analytics Cloud Excel Add-in in the locations below.

  •  Refer to the 'What's New in SAP Analytics Cloud, add-in for Microsoft Excel' for version 2026.01.
If the table is based on a model with a flexible time dimension, meaning that the date dimension is set to user-managed, the Excel add-in cannot be opened from a story, and the table menu button "Open Excel Add-in" is greyed out.

If the date dimension is set to system-managed, the table menu button is enabled, and you can open the Excel add-in from the story.

  • Refer to the 'Add a table from Story' section within the SAP Analytics Cloud online help.

    Restrictions
In the following scenario, the Excel add-in cannot be opened from a story, and the table menu button "Open Excel Add-in" is greyed out:
If the table is based on a model with a flexible time dimension, meaning that the date dimension is set to user-managed.

If the date dimension is set to system-managed, the table menu button is enabled, and you can open the Excel add-in from the story.

Resolution

Only attempt to launch the SAP Analytics Cloud Excel Add-in from a table using the 'Open in Excel Add-in' option, when the source model for the story contains a Date dimension that is set to 'System Managed Date'.
