3757844 - Tempdb Allocation problems during huge report run

Symptom

During some huge report or big query execution the following error message is printed:

Can't allocate space for object 'temp worktable' in database 'tempdb' because the 'system' segment is full or has no free extents. If you ran out of space in syslogs, dump the transaction log. Otherwise, use ALTER DATABASE to increase the size of the segment.

Even after increasing the log segment the same error message still happens.

While checking the query plan for the report/big query, it is possible to see multiple worktables and some table scans being performed.

The OPTDIAG for the tables accessed by the query return bad index statistics for it:
