Symptom
- Error message: "Create the retained earnings account & in company code &." during balance carryforward when transferring balances to the next fiscal year
- No balances are available to transfer, yet the process still requires creation of the G/L account.
Environment
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
Reproducing the Issue
- Start Balance Carryforward to move balances to the next fiscal year.
- Run the process for ledgers 0L and 2L.
- Observe that the run stops with the error: "Create the retained earnings account & in company code &."
Cause
The Balance Carryforward program performs a configuration completeness check before processing balances and verifies that the retained earnings account mapped to the relevant P&L statement account type in the chart of accounts exists at company code level; if the company code segment is missing, the error is raised even when no balances exist.
Resolution
- In the Manage G/L Account Master Data app (SSCUI 150001), create the company code segment for the retained earnings G/L account that is assigned to the relevant P&L statement account type in the chart of accounts for each affected company code.
- Re-run Balance Carryforward in test mode and verify the process completes without errors.
Note: If a shared chart of accounts is used, extend the retained earnings account to all company codes that use the affected P&L account type to prevent future Balance Carryforward errors.
