3770812 - Error "Field cannot be created business context capacity is exhausted" for Business Context SD_BILLINGDOCITEM - SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Error "Field cannot be created. Business context capacity is exhausted." is displayed when creating a new custom field in the SD_BILLINGDOCITEM business context due to capacity limits being reached in 'Custom Fields'(F1481) app.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

1. Open the 'Custom Fields '(F1481)app.
2. Click the "+" symbol to create a new custom field.
3. Select the business context Sales: Billing Document Item (SD_BILLINGDOCITEM).
4. Select the field type and specify its name.
5. Increase the field length; the Business Context Capacity indicator increases accordingly until the warning is shown.

The business context has a limited extension field capacity due to DDIC and database constraints, and this business context maximum capacity of approximately 3,400 characters has been reached.

Follow the steps below to prevent this error:

• Review the existing custom fields in the SD_BILLINGDOCITEM business context and identify fields that are no longer required.
• Delete any unused custom fields to free up business context capacity.
• When creating new custom fields, use the smallest appropriate field length or a data type with lower storage requirements to minimize capacity consumption.
• Monitor the Business Context Capacity indicator while creating extension fields and avoid reaching the maximum limit.
• Use the 'Extensibility Cockpit'(F2866) app to review the remaining capacity for business contexts and plan future extensions accordingly.
• Longtext functionality should be considered instead. Longtexts are independent from custom fields and can store much more text.
• Another option is to use Business context SD_BILLINGDOC additionally, but custom fields on header level have the risk that they cause Billing Document split or prevent a merge, if the field values are automatically copied from a preceding document.
