3775475 - Can Business Rules Be Authored Directly by Editing the DSL Syntax in Exported Files?

Symptom

We would like to use the Business Rules Import functionality as an alternative to configuring rules through the UI, in order to improve rule configuration efficiency.

After exporting rules from the system, we noticed that the rules are parsed into a specific DSL (Domain-Specific Language) syntax. We would like to understand this DSL syntax so that we can author rules directly in a spreadsheet and import them into the system in bulk.

Is there any publicly available comprehensive documentation on the Business Rules DSL syntax?

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors Platform

Reproducing the Issue

1. Navigate to Admin Center → Import and Export Data.

2. Select the option to Export Rules.

3. Open the exported file and observe that the rules are represented in a specific DSL syntax.

4. Attempt to locate official documentation describing this DSL syntax — no such documentation is available.

Cause

The primary purpose of the Business Rules Import/Export functionality is to support the following scenarios:

  1. Migrating rules across instances (e.g., from the Test environment to the Production environment);
  2. Backing up and restoring rules.

Please note the following important points:

  • SAP does not provide any UI to configure the DSL directly, and therefore no official documentation on the DSL syntax is available.
  • We strongly advise against manually editing the rule DSL in the exported file, as no guardrails are provided in this scenario.
  • The Graphical User Interface (GUI) is the recommended and supported method for rule configuration. It guides users step by step and provides rule-scenario-specific guardrails to ensure correctness.

Resolution

It is advised to use Configure Business Rules tool to create and modify rules. The Import/Export feature should only be used for the supported scenarios listed above (migration and backup/restore), not for authoring new rules from scratch.
