3777309 - Plant field is greyed out on Sales Order item after Outbound Delivery creation in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Symptom

  • The Plant field on a Sales Order item cannot be changed after an Outbound Delivery has been created.
  • The field appears greyed out / non-editable.
  • Users need to reassign the item to a different plant (e.g., when the original plant has insufficient stock) before Post Goods Issue (PGI), but the system does not allow it.

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Create a Sales Order with one item and assign Plant A.
  2. Create the Outbound Delivery for the item.
  3. Open the Sales Order and attempt to change the Plant field on the item.
  4. Result: the Plant field is greyed out and cannot be modified.

Cause

This is standard system behavior. A Sales Order item supports only one Delivering Plant at a time. Once an Outbound Delivery references the item, the Plant field is locked to preserve document and process consistency.

Resolution

To change the plant on the Sales Order item before PGI:

  1. Delete the Outbound Delivery linked to the Sales Order item.
  2. Change the Plant on the Sales Order item to the desired alternative plant.
  3. Recreate the Outbound Delivery from the new plant.

Note: While a single Sales Order item can only have one Delivering Plant, a Sales Order can contain multiple items, each with its own Delivering Plant. If goods need to be shipped from several plants within the same order, create one item per plant.
