3780882 - I close a Purchase Order, but the status remains "Waiting for acknowledgment from external system"

Symptom

When I close a Purchase Order (PO) in my SAP Ariba Buying and Invoicing, the document is sent to my SAP ECC or SAP S/4HANA system and the PO is closed there. However, I do not receive the close status response back in SAP Ariba Buying and Invoicing.
