3782501 - Catalog Synchronization Fails with "Access protocol is not allowed for media URL" After Upgrading to JDK 21 in SAP Commerce Cloud

Symptom

After upgrading SAP Commerce Cloud to JDK 21, catalog synchronization jobs start failing for Media items or custom item types extending Media (e.g., document types, image types). The synchronization was working correctly on earlier JDK version without any code or configuration changes.

The failure typically appears in the synchronization debug logs with an exception similar to the following:

An exception occurred during synchronization for item: <PK> of type: <ItemType>sync ended with 1 unfinished items - see last sync media for details
Caused by: de.hybris.platform.catalog.SynchronizationPersistenceException:
de.hybris.platform.jalo.JaloSystemException:
Access protocol is not allowed for media URL.
Only: [fromjar, https, http] are allowed.

This issue can also happen when customer edit a media in backoffice by clicking on "Clear Content" and then save it. The error message is similar to the following:
"level":"ERROR","loggerName":"com.hybris.cockpitng.widgets.baseeditorarea.DefaultEditorAreaController","message":"Object 13033916923934 could not be saved","thrown":{"commonElementCount":0,"localizedMessage":"Object 13033916923934 could not be saved","message":"Object 13033916923934 could not be saved","name":"com.hybris.cockpitng.dataaccess.facades.object.exceptions.ObjectSavingException","cause":{"commonElementCount":118,"localizedMessage":"[de.hybris.platform.servicelayer.interceptor.impl.MediaExternalUrlSourcesValidator@5a760a51]:Access protocol is not allowed for media URL . Only: [fromjar, https, http] are allowed."
