3782820 - Opening Balance and Retained Earnings Are Available Before Balance Carryforward Is Executed

The opening balance of the Retained Earnings account is already available in the new fiscal year even though the Balance Carryforward has not been executed

SAP Business ByDesign

1. Go to the General Ledger work center.
2. Go to the Reports view.
3. Open the Trial Balance or Financial Statements report.
4. Select a fiscal year for which the Balance Carryforward has not yet been executed.

Observe that:
The opening balance for the new fiscal year is already displayed.
The previous fiscal year's Profit and Loss has been transferred to the Retained Earnings account.
No Balance Carryforward posting document exists.

In SAP Business ByDesign, the Balance Carryforward is simulated in financial reports such as the Trial Balance and Financial Statements. The system does not require a Balance Carryforward run to calculate the opening balances displayed in these reports.

During report execution, the system automatically:

Carries forward the closing balances of Balance Sheet accounts.
Transfers the cumulative balance of the assigned Profit and Loss accounts to the configured Retained Earnings account.

Since this calculation is performed dynamically, no Balance Carryforward journal entry is created.

Therefore, the opening balance of the new fiscal year and the updated Retained Earnings balance may already be visible even though the Balance Carryforward activity has not been executed.

The system is behaving as designed.

The opening balances displayed in the Trial Balance and Financial Statements are calculated dynamically using the previous fiscal year's closing balances.

The Balance Carryforward activity is not required for these reports to display opening balances, as the carryforward is simulated by the application.
