3783931 - Project Manager Disappeared From Projects

Symptom

Project manager disappears suddenly in customer projects.

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Open Project Control for Enterprise Projects.
  2. Search for an affected project.
  3. Observe that the Project Manager field is empty.
  4. Review the project change log and note that it does not show any removal of the project manager after the original assignment.

Cause

Project manager role assignments were removed because the corresponding Business Users were deleted in the system. Deleting a Business User (for example, via the Maintain Business Users app) automatically removes all associated project role assignments from open projects. This cleanup occurs at database level and is not recorded in the project change log. Afterward, the Business Users can be recreated, but their previous project role assignments are not restored.

Resolution

  1. Verify whether the impacted user accounts were deleted and later recreated in the Maintain Business Users app.
  2. If deletion occurred, recreate or reactivate the Business User as required.
  3. Reassign the project manager (and any other necessary project roles) to all affected open projects in the relevant project management applications.
  4. Prevent recurrence by avoiding deletion of active Business Users and by implementing governance (for example, authorization controls or a review step) around Business User deletion actions.
