Symptom
- An error occurs when loading Story report widgets.
- Error message payload: {"Messages":[{"Type":2,"Number":4562,"Text":"We found an error while processing the current request."}]}
- Issue is experienced by multiple users.
Environment
- Story Designer - Story & Formatting
Reproducing the Issue
- Navigate to Reporting.
- Open the affected Story report.
- Observe that widgets fail to load and the error appears.
- Edit data source and we can see error "Failed to get metadata for *******. Please remove it from the query and try again."
Cause
- The Story report was exported from one instance and imported into another where the underlying data model/configuration is not identical. A referenced custom MDF object is not properly configured in the target instance (for example, missing Report Object Configuration Entity settings such as Is root and/or sub domain schema), leading to metadata retrieval errors in the Story query.
Resolution
- Open the Story in Story Designer.
- Edit the data source of the affected widget or query.
- Click Preview Query to reveal the detailed backend error causing the failure.
- If the error indicates “Failed to get metadata for
- 1. Align the target instance configuration with the source instance:
- In Report Object Configuration Entity, ensure the referenced MDF object is correctly maintained (for example, set Is root appropriately and maintain the sub domain schema list to match the source).
- 2. Alternatively, remove or replace the missing/invalid object from the query, then re-preview the query.
- After alignment or adjustment, refresh the Story and validate that widgets load successfully.
- If the issue persists, contact your administrator or SAP Product Support.
