3786991 - BP transaction - Error R1 286 "Business partner &1 already exists"

Symptom

  • Creating a Business Partner (transaction BP) fails with message R1 286 "Business partner &1 already exists".
  • Retrying assigns the next number, which also already exists, so the number climbs by one on each attempt and every attempt fails.
  • The affected grouping uses internal number assignment.
  • Occurs on assigning the grouping, changing the account group, or adding a role (for example the vendor/supplier role) that triggers BP number assignment.
