Symptom
- An error occurs when logging into the source system via the SAP Datasphere connection after an s/4hana upgrade.
- Error message: "Name or password is incorrect (repeat logon)\nCode: RFC_LOGON_FAILURE".
- The issue occurs during transfer of delta data in replication flows.
- The error disappears after multiple retries (for example, the 4th attempt succeeds).
Environment
- Product: SAP Datasphere
- Connections: SAP S/4HANA On-Premise connection (ABAP-based source), Replication Flow/Data Flow with CDC
Reproducing the Issue
- Upgrade the source system to SAP S/4HANA.
- Resume delta replication flows in SAP Datasphere after the upgrade.
- Observe the connection failure with: "Name or password is incorrect (repeat logon)\nCode: RFC_LOGON_FAILURE".
- Retry the extraction multiple times; a subsequent attempt eventually succeeds.
Cause
A transient application server startup synchronization issue in the source s/4hana system after the upgrade, where application/message servers, ICM, gateways, or security services are not yet fully synchronized at the time the first post-upgrade access occurs.
Resolution
SAP has not publicly announced specific roadmap items targeting automatic retry logic or upgrade-aware login handling in Datasphere at this time.

Regarding the Replication Flows during source system upgrade, please consider the following recommendation:
- Before initiating the S/4HANA upgrade, pause all active Replication Flows from the Datasphere Data Integration Monitor.
- Rather than restarting immediately after the upgrade completes, allow sufficient time for all S/4HANA services (application servers, message servers, ICM, gateways, security services) to fully initialize and synchronize before resuming Datasphere replication.
- Be aware that the first replication run after a pause may take considerably longer than usual, as it will replicate all source data changes that accumulated during the pause window.
