3790954 - Automatic batch determination fails in sales order creation "It was not possible to determine a batch" (V1565)

Symptom

When creating a Sales Order for a material subject to batch management, the system throws the following error upon adding the line item:

  • "It was not possible to determine a batch" (Message No. V1565)

The batch is not automatically determined. The same material and batch search strategy work correctly in a Sales Organization whose storage locations are not managed by EWM.

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Cause

The storage locations assigned to the plant in scope are managed by SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM). In this configuration, automatic batch determination is intentionally deferred from the SD layer to EWM. Rather than selecting a specific batch at Sales Order or outbound delivery creation, the system replicates the batch selection criteria to EWM, where the batch search is performed during warehouse processing, taking the warehouse layout and structure into account.

As a result, message V1565 is raised not because batch determination has failed, but because it is by design not executed in SD. The behavior is controlled by the "BatchDetEW" field in configuration activity 'Configure SAP EWM-Specific Parameters' (102212), which is read-only.

Resolution

This is expected system behavior.

The batch will be determined at the warehouse processing stage within EWM, based on the replicated batch selection criteria.
