• A previous “reset data source” (AO query reset) changed report layouts and configurations unexpectedly.
• After updating a hierarchy, the new hierarchy appears in Analysis for Office without performing a “reset data source”.

In SAP Analysis for Microsoft Office (AO), "Reset Data Source" is used to clear navigation steps, fetch updated datasources, fix stuck variable prompts, clear filters, retrieve backend design changes, remove all Table Design rules and force variable updates. 

"Reset Data Source" should be avoided when you want to preserve your navigational state, custom formulas, or specific layouts. 
Avoid using it when dealing with:
-Custom navigational states (filters, drill-downs, and sort orders)
-Local calculations, restricted key figures, or conditional formatting
-CDS-based queries where the reset command fails to pull updates properly

Risks of Resetting the Data Source
Loss of Navigation: All user-driven navigation steps, custom hierarchies, and applied filters are completely wiped out, returning the report to its default design state.
Erasure of Local Enhancements: Custom elements built inside the workbook—such as locally defined restricted figures, structures, or conditional formatting rules—can be permanently deleted or unlinked.
Ineffectiveness on CDS Views: Executing a reset on Core Data Services (CDS) queries does not reliably fetch structural backend modifications compared to traditional BEx queries.

General use suggestions:
-A "Reset Data Source" is not required to use or display a newly added hierarchy in your report. 
-"Refresh Data" will pull the latest transaction numbers without altering structure or layout. 
-Perform a full Log off and Log on to the backend system if master data or text updates seem to be needed.
