3797629 - SM59 connection test fails with "Connection closed" from SAP 4.6C system after kernel upgrade

Symptom

An RFC connection test (SM59) from an SAP 4.6C system to a newer ABAP system fails with:

  • Connection closed

      or

  • R/3 connection: Connection closed

The issue can start after upgrading the kernel of the target system. In the target system work process trace (dev_w*) the following error may be observed:

  • *** ERROR => state check failed: state=1 versus specified rfcstate=0 in line=*** [abrfcget.c   ***]

RFC communication works again after reverting the target system to an older kernel patch level.
