3798842 - SWPM fails at MssLoginInfo with “SSL Provider: The target principal name is incorrect”

Symptom

During an SAP system installation or system copy on Microsoft SQL Server, SWPM fails at the following step:

NW_MSS_DBINFO > MssLoginInfo > dAskForConnection

The following errors appear in sapinst_dev.log:

Cannot connect to <database_server>


[Microsoft][ODBC Driver 18 for SQL Server]

SSL Provider: The target principal name is incorrect.


[Microsoft][ODBC Driver 18 for SQL Server]

Client unable to establish connection.

The log may also contain:

The MS SQL Server version (17) is not supported by this installation.

The SQL Server certificate contains the fully qualified domain name (FQDN), but SWPM attempts to connect using the short hostname.
