Symptom
- Are those default fonts provided by SAP to customers as part of RCM/RMK license?
- Would customers need to obtain a license from the font vendor to use them on their career site?
Environment
SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting Marketing
Reproducing the Issue
- Navigate to Manage Career Site Builder > Appearance > Styles > Global Styles.
- Expand the dropdown list of Default Font.
Resolution
In the default font list, there are predefined font stacks, such as "Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif". These options do not include any actual font files (.ttf, .otf, etc.).
Instead, they are font-family declarations that specify a prioritized list of font families for the browser to use. The selected font depends on the fonts available to the user's browser and operating system.
When a user visits the career site, the browser tries fonts in order and falls back to the next if not found. For example:
- font-family: Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif
If Tahoma is installed on the computer, the browser will use Tahoma. If Tahoma is not found, it falls back to Geneva. If neither is found, the browser will use an available font from its generic sans-serif family. The specific font selected varies by device, browser, operating system, and user settings.
Since RMK is not redistributing the font files, just referencing system fonts, there are no font licensing or copyright concerns for using these font stack options.
For custom font files uploaded to CSB, the situation is different. Uploading and serving a font file can constitute webfont use or distribution. Customers are responsible for ensuring that they have a license that permits the intended web use, including self-hosting or embedding where applicable.
