3799983 - Validation Error for Dependent Picklist Values During Manage Pending Hire – Onboarding

When submitting Manage Pending Hire, a validation error may occur for a custom field configured as a dependent picklist.

For example: “Asian is not the expected value for Race because you selected Ethnicity. Please select a valid Race or select different value for ethnicity.”

The dependent field may also display an existing value while its dropdown shows “No data.”

SAP SuccessFactors Onboarding

1. Configure a custom field as a dependent picklist with another picklist defined as its parent.
2. Configure the corresponding parent field to use a different or mismatched picklist.
3. Ensure the external codes of the parent values do not match between the two picklists.
4. Initiate an onboarding process and proceed to Manage Pending Hire.
5. Populate the parent field and a dependent field value.
6. Submit the Manage Pending Hire step.
7. Observe that the system displays a validation error for the dependent field, or that the dependent field dropdown shows “No data.”

The dependent picklist is configured with a parent picklist that does not match the picklist used by the corresponding parent field.

If the external codes of the parent values do not match, the system cannot resolve the dependent value correctly, resulting in validation errors during submission.

Review the configuration of the affected dependent picklist and ensure the parent-child relationship is correctly aligned:

1. Navigate to Picklist Center and open the dependent picklist.
2. Verify that the Parent Picklist Values reference the same picklist used by the corresponding parent field.
3. Confirm that the external codes of the parent values are correctly aligned between the parent and dependent picklists.
4. In Manage Business Configuration, verify that the corresponding parent and dependent fields are correctly configured and enabled.
5. If the values are populated from Recruiting, additionally verify that the expected values are correctly passed to Onboarding.

For example, if a custom Race field is configured as a dependent picklist with Ethnicity as its parent, ensure that the Race picklist references the same Ethnicity picklist used by the Ethnicity field and that the corresponding external codes are aligned.

After correcting the configuration, retest the Manage Pending Hire step and verify that the dependent field displays the expected values and the validation error no longer occurs.
